A Time For Letting Go
By Julia Phares

Tommy Oliver opened the letter he`d just recieved from Kimberly Hart, his girlfriend. His face was very animated. He hadn`t heard from Kimberly in so long!

"Sometimes you find out what you wanted, isn`t really what you need,
and a dream in all it`s promise was never meant to be,
All your hope and desperation, won`t make it like it was.
And you believe the pain will never pass, but believe me, in time it does......"

He slid the letter out and began to read it. His jaw dropped. Kim was breaking up with him! For Jason! His best friend in the entire world! He sank into a chair and rubbed his eyes. He picked up the phone and dialed the number Kimberly had left at the bottom of the letter. As it rang, song lyrics ran through his head....

"You`ve gotta know when love is over,
you`ve gotta learn to carry on,
And with the world upon your shoulders,
you walk away when hope is gone,
When your golden road has reached the end,
You find the strength to start again,
You know.
There`s a time for love and a time for letting go."

Kimberly picked up the phone when it rang. ''Hello?'' She said cheerfully. Her heart sank as Tommy said hello.

Jason, who was getting up, asked, ''Kim, who is it?''

Kimberly called back, ''Tommy. He got my letter.'' She continued, ''Oh, Tommy! You seemed so happy with Kat. And Jason came to visit me. And I realized I had feelings for him. And they were stronger than the ones for you. I hope you understand.''

Jason padded over to the phone and took it from Kim. ''Tommy we didn`t expect this to happen, I swear! We hadn`t known that we`d fallen in love!''

Tommy silently listened to his friends' pleadings. He felt numb.

"When you`re standing tall tomorrow, looking back at yesterday,
Through the memory of your sorrow,
how the dawn was so far away,
You`ll be far beyond the shadows, where hearts can learn to shine,

And you`ll realize the endless night, was only a moment in time."

He said, ''Why would you do this to me, Kim? I thought you loved me! And with Jason?'' Kimberly had taken the phone back, and she snapped angrily, ''What? It`s not like I cheated on you! I have a right to leave you if the feeling`s not there anymore! So even though I understand where you`re coming from, I think you need to get on over yourself!'' With that, she hung up.

Tommy stared at the phone. So many years with Kim, gone. Down the drain. How could it be over? Strangely enough, he didn`t feel any resentment for her or Jason. He kinda felt that Kim was right. They couldn`t help their feelings for each other. He decided to call back and aplogize. Then he`d call Kat and ask if she wanted to catch a movie.

"You`ve gotta know when love is over,
you`ve gotta learn to carry on, with the world upon your shoulders,
you walk away when hope is gone,
when your golden road has reached the end,
you find the strength to start again,
you know,
there`s a time for love, and a time for letting go

The night is young, the night is cold,
with nothing to believe in,
Just hold on, cause life goes on,
Your new day is waiting, Let go and let it begin!

You`ve gotta know when love is over,
You`ve gotta learn to carry on,
When the world`s upon your shoulders,
you walk away when hope is gone,
when your golden road has reached the end,
you find the strength to start again
you know,
There`s a time for love, and a time for letting go.
