Note: * Hello! First things first. Suzy beta-read this for me, so I thank her. :) This story, "In My Mind..." is a short and sweet fanfic that is part of "The Guardian Saga" but takes place about two years before Shannon even shows her face in Angel Grove. This basically is a Tommy story (Yes, another one...) and takes place right after the letter scene in the second season MMPR episode "Missing Green". As for inspiration, while watching "Missing Green" during the scene where Tommy's writes his letter to Jason, a thought struck me: What was Tommy thinking about and/or doing up there when he was at the cabin? So that's what this whole thing is about. By the by, the song used in the story is "Every Time It Rains" by Ace Of Base from their album "Cruel Summer".

In My Mind

Dear Jason,

I know this is a little late, but I'm writing to you guys to let you all know that I'm okay. I miss you guys a lot; but I need this time to get my head together.

Jase, go win that gold pipe trophy for me. I know you can do it. You're a winner, you always have been. Look, I don't blame you for what happened; I never did. Just keep your head together. The others depend on you. So do I.

We'll see each other again soon.

Your Friend,

Tommy

Tommy Oliver stared upon the letter he had just written on the notepad and smiled. It said everything he had wanted to say.

He didn't blame Jason for his loss of powers; he blamed no one. Not even Lord Zedd.

Tommy didn't tell anyone, but since he possessed the Green Ranger powers, he knew they didn't belong to him. The powers just didn't settle right with him. He knew he wasn't destined to be the Green Ranger; he never told anyone that though. He desperately needed to be a Power Ranger to make up for all the wrongs he had done under Rita Repulsa's control.

Then, a light lit up his life. More specifically that light's name was Kimberly Ann Hart. She was everything Tommy wanted. Beautiful, caring, carefree, courageous and everything else that the ex-Green Ranger had wanted; at least, that's what Tommy let himself believe.

"Nope; Kim isn't what I want," he admitted to himself as he returned to his uncle's cabin.

Placing the notepad down on the wooden porch and hanging his light brown leather jacket on a chair, he sat down on the flight of stairs that lead down from the porch. "What I really want is Shannon back," he told himself. "I'd die just to have her with me again."

Sitting in complete silence, he pondered the thought of ever seeing Shannon Kassandra Kaze again.

I see dark clouds out my window
I know the storm is coming any minute
And the thunder just confirms my fears
And I know the tears are in it
I'll be cryin' unable to stop
Look here comes the very first drop

"Rain."

That was the first word that shot out of Tommy's mouth as he felt the cold wet liquid hit his nose ten minutes later. "Kimberly hates the rain," he told himself, looking up at the clouded skies while recalling the time their picnic date had been ruined by the act of Mother Nature.

He stood up from the porch of the cabin and walked down the wooden plank steps, totally ignoring the rain as it began to pour down on him. "Shannon loves the rain," he whispered out loud, stepping onto the path that went around the lake near the cabin. "She loves running through it; she loves being wet," he remembered, licking the water off of his lips.

"Kim hates being wet," the ex-Green Ranger compared, "the rain always ruins her hair."

Running a hand through his now soaked hair, Tommy stopped walking and stared down at the ground. "We first kissed in the rain and then we said good-bye in the rain..."

'Cuz every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you
I taste you
I cannot forget
Everytime it rains
I get wet

{FLASHBACK}

"That was awesome, Tommy!" Shannon cried happily between her giggles, pulling Tommy along as she ran away from the group of cheerleaders.

"Whaddya mean by that Shannon?" he insisted as he waved back at the girls.

"I mean, you totally set them up," she stopped running and glanced back at her best friend. "They actually think you want to go out with them!"

"But I do!" the thirteen-year-old pointed out, causing the brunette girl to gasp.

Her blue eyes became slightly cloudy at his announcement. "You do?" she questioned, her voice tainted with sadness. "I thought you didn't want to go out with any of the girls in Summer Springs."

Tommy nodded his head in the negative, not noticing how hurt Shannon was. "I kinda lied, Shannon," he shyly admitted to her. "Some of those girls are really nice!"

She stepped in front of her best friend and stared into his eyes, tears starting to form in her own blue ones. "Are you okay, Shannon?" he asked her, worry in his voice.

Shannon stifled a forced laugh. "Do I look okay, Tommy?" Tears started to fall from her eyes and slide down her cheeks, merging with the rain that was wetting her face also. "I want to go out with you!"

Tommy watched as she grabbed his arm fiercely and gazed deeply into his eyes. "I want to be the first to feel your lips on mine, to have you hug me in that girlfriend/boyfriend way, to be showered with flowers every now and then...I wanna be yours, Tommy..."

"I know that," he smiled, touching Shannon's wet hair with his hand. "I feel the same way."

A big toothy grin immediately coated the other girl's mouth. "You do?" she asked shocked, then frowned. "How come you said you wanted to go out with those pimps over there then?"

"Because," he pulled her closer to his body and lowered his voice, "I wanted you to admit it for me."

"But..." the brunette's protest was cut off by the pressing of Tommy's finger to her lips.

"Don't ruin the moment, Sweetcheeks," he instructed her, calling her by the nickname for the first time. "Just kiss me and make OUR dreams a reality."

Moving her head up to his, the two met in a passionate and fervent kiss that left them both gasping for air when they released each other from the liplock.

Smiling as the rain poured even harder on her, Shannon cocked her head funnily at Tommy. "Sweetcheeks?"

Darlin' I am still in love with you
As time passes by it just intensifies
I know I'll never be with you again
I'll never find another with that kindness in her eyes
I'll be trying unable to stop
Look here comes the very first drop

'Cuz every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you
I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains
I get wet

{FLASHBACK}

"Are you sure you want to do this Tommy?" Kevin Oliver asked his son as he pulled the car up in front of a blue and gray house. "It's raining pretty hard out there."

"Positive, Dad," Tommy acknowledged him, opening up the car's side door and stepping out.

"Say 'bye to Shannon for me, Tommy!" Tamara Oliver yelled at her brother as he slammed the door shut in her face.

Hearing Tamara, he ran through the rain and up to the porch, where he pressed the doorbell. "Who is it?" he heard a voice on the other side of the front door.

"It is God coming to say good-bye," fifteen-year-old boy teased, his voice tense with pain.

Instantly, the door flew open and revealed Shannon standing at the door staring at him in awe. "I thought it was over," she informed him, her voice flat and dull.

"Not the way I see it," Tommy pointed out, raindrops dripping off of his brow. "See, I still love you and I can't leave Summer Springs without you thinking that I don't. It would be morally wrong."

Swallowing hard, Shannon nearly jumped into her boyfriend's arms and squeezed him tightly, as if she would never let him go. "I love you, Olive Oil," she cried, burying her face into his wet shoulder. "I'll always love you."

"I love you too, Sweetcheeks," he whispered in her ear while she released him from the hug.

"You've gotta go, Tommy," the brunette urged, pushing him away from the door. "It was really nice of you to drop by though."

"Shannon, what's wrong..."

She looked at him, her eyes teaming with tears. "Please, Tommy," his girlfriend begged, backing away into the house. "Don't make this any harder than it already is."

"But..."

"Good-bye, Thomas Oliver. I'll always love and remember you," Shannon spoke softly as she began to close the door in his face.

"Shannon, please..."

SLAM!

The door was shut and Tommy stared at it. It was a reminder; an omen.

Tommy Oliver's life in Summer Springs was no more.

{END OF FLASHBACK}

On sunny days I'm all right
I walk in the light
And I try not to think about
The love I live without

But every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you
I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains
I get wet

Tommy looked up at the gray raining skies and slowly began to cry. "WHY ME?" he screamed up towards the heavens for an answer. "WHY AM I SO FUCKING CURSED WITH THE DAMN LIFE I HAVE?!?!?!"

Dropping to his knees onto the wet dirt, he sobbed and sobbed until there were no more tears left to accent his deep loss. That was when the wet teenager began his letter to his only love; a verbal letter.

Dear Shannon,

I am sorry about everything. I'm sorry I hurt you and I'm sorry that I'm betraying you right now.

I can't help myself though. If it wasn't for Kim, I would be going crazy with grief. Grief that I can't stop myself from feeling. If you were here however, everything would be so much happier; so much more comfortable.

You deserve someone so much better than me, but I really can't think of that person right now! All I can tell you is that I truly love you; I'll always love you.

Love Always,

Thomas Oliver

But every time it rains
I fall to pieces
So many memories the rain releases
I feel you
I taste you
I cannot forget
Every time it rains
I get wet
